Authorized for Use by
Each purchase of digital sheet music products from Musicnotes will print with a cover page. In addition to printing the What does "Authorized for use by" mean? information, the cover page also prints the following notice:
NOTICE: Purchasers of this musical file are entitled to use it for their personal enjoyment and musical fulfillment. However, any duplication, adaptation, arranging and/or transmission of this copyrighted music requires the written consent of the copyright owner(s) and of Musicnotes, Inc.. Unauthorized uses are infringements of the copyright laws of the United States and other countries and may subject the user to civil and/or criminal penalties.
Performance
Musicnotes is not able to grant performance rights for the sheet music, as we are a retailer of copyrighted products.
To obtain performance rights for the sheet music, we recommend visiting the publishers website, as they typically have extensive help articles and submission forms for these requests.
The publisher information can be found on the cover page of the printed sheet music, as well as under the “Song Details” tab at the bottom of every product page for the corresponding sheet music.
Competitions and Exams
Music competitions and music exams will require proof that the entrant legally purchased the sheet music used for the competition or exam. The cover page, stating the "Authorized for Use by" will suffice for this requirement.
Generally, these competitions and exams will require multiple prints of a product to be purchased - one for the judges, one for the performer, and one for the accompanist.
For further information, please see the website for the specific competition or exam.
Live Streaming and Recording
Please note: If you intend on recording or live streaming a performance of the sheet music, this may require additional licenses or permissions which Musicnotes is not able to grant*.
*The exception to this is a special type of product we offer, referred to as Musicnotes Editions. The product pages for these products will show the notice:
"Musicnotes Edition: Full performance and recording rights and unlimited prints."
We recommend checking with your intended website or streaming platform’s Terms of Service documentation for their standards, as well as researching what licenses you may need to acquire to be legally allowed to record and distribute the content you intend to create.
